Safety First: Dedicated To A Healthy Workplace

At Hines, safety is at the forefront of our service delivery. We are committed to fostering a safe work environment for our employees and clients, as well as caring for the environment and the communities in which we live and work.

We are a member of the Alberta Construction Safety Association, and we take pride in the safety culture that we have created with the support of all of our dedicated workers. We want them to get home safe every day!

Hines participates in a daily toolbox talk and holds weekly safety meetings to share information about current health, safety and environment issues, as well as to ensure that our workers adhere both to occupational health and safety legislation and our own safety commitments, policies and procedures.

Our workers are involved in the hazard assessment process, including field level hazard assessments, site inspections and behaviour observations.

We are committed to developing and maintaining safe work environments year after year.

Our Commitment to Workplace Safety

At Hines, our commitment to providing and maintaining a safe and healthy work environment for all personnel is supported by our Health and Safety Program. Here are some highlights of our safety successes:

  • We successfully integrated our safety system into a cloud-based safety management software system that allowed us to run our entire safety program from mobile apps and the web.
  • The new system significantly improved Hines’ safety processes and safety culture across the entire company by providing real-time monitoring and automatically filing and organizing documents for reporting and analytics.
  • We achieved a Total Recordable Incident Frequency of 1.67—an improvement to our 2016 target of 1.95.
  • We conducted 24 emergency preparedness training exercises (table top, drill and full scale) across the organization.
  • We improved our 2017 Certificate of Recognition (COR) results in Alberta by 3 per cent over our 2016 results, achieving an overall score of 94 per cent.

Our Health and Safety Program:

  • trains all employees in good health, safety and environmental practices
  • ensures all employees know of and follow safety procedures
  • provides required personal protective equipment and instructions of use and care
  • maintains a comprehensive worksite inspection program to ensure all company safety standards are implemented and compliant
  • investigates all accidents and near-misses to identify causes and implement corrective measures
  • equips all employees to identify potential risks and take the necessary actions to mitigate them
